Find Rest

What do you do when you’re stressed or upset?

I sometimes turn to a friend, go online to pass the time, or just sit down and work it out in my mind. These can be very helpful at times.

When I first started college, I was 16, and had an honor’s class. I also had been homeschooled for years and this was my first official classroom experience since the 4th grade. Needless to say…I was kinda nervous.

I remember each assignment was causing new waves of worry and fear. My way to deal with the assignments were to worry about them. I figured if I worried hard enough about it, I would feel guilty enough to do it on time. Looking back, it’s a terrible work ethic.

But my entire philosophy changed that semester. I was intrigued by the beginning verses in Psalm 62:

My soul finds rest in God alone;
   my salvation comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
   he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. (vs. 1-2 NIV 1984)

I was struck by the phrase “alone.” It hit me that I only need to trust in the Father alone, not in my own abilities in school-work. This new philosophy can be applied to practically anything! My soul finds rest in God, not money, not perfect kids, not a successful career, not a good reputation, and not even browsing the internet!

During this week, strip away something you find rest in, and aim to rest in the Lord instead.
