The True Reset

I recently played an interesting video game called Undertale. It’s the story about a young human child who falls into an underground world and about their adventure to get back home.

The character encounters several (usually friendly) monsters along the way and can decide to befriend them, leave them alone, or kill them.

Depending on the decisions the character makes, the story can have several different endings, although there is a “best” ending and a “worst” ending. The best ending occurs when the character befriends every monster, and never kills to gain any type of advantage. The worst ending happens when the character kills every monster, leaving the Underground empty.

But the designer of Undertale, Toby Fox, added a very interesting feature. If someone successfully completes the worst ending, he or she cannot obtain the happy ending even if the game is reset. It turns out the happiest ending is never attainable again and the worst ending is the only option.

This was a chilling realization for fans who were not expecting their bad decisions to haunt them even after they thought they could reset the game on their own.

Luckily for the fans, Toby did develop a True Reset program that can be downloaded and integrated into a player’s version of Undertale. This True Reset program ultimately wipes the game clean, allowing the player to start anew and the happiest ending becomes attainable once again.

I was struck by the similary with this True Reset program, and God’s grace for us.

When it boils down to it, it’s impossible for humanity to obtain heaven (A.K.A the happiest ending) on our own. Because we’re tainted with sin with the bad choices we’ve made, there’s no use. No matter how many times we’ve believed that we’ve “reset” ourselves, it’s impossible.

But God has a plan. If you’ll allow him to become Lord and accept his grace, “though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18, NIV).

In other words, allow his True Reset file into your life, and then through him, you’ll find the happiest ending of all.
