It irks me when I’m with someone and it’s obvious the person feels like it’s an honor for me to be around him or her. In other words, people sometimes act as if they are better than I am. Of course, this makes me feel degraded and I try to avoid these types of people.
Paul wrote against this kind of behavior in Philippians. In verses 3-4, he says “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (NIV).
He specifically says to value people above yourself. So the next time you’re meeting up with people, don’t treat them as if they should be honored to see you. Act as if you’re honored to see them.
